CenterPoint Energy donates backhoe to Minnesota Community and Technical College to support Gas Utility Construction and Service Program

March 9, 2016

MINNEAPOLIS – March 9, 2016 – CenterPoint Energy recently donated the Wadena Minnesota Community and Technical College (M State) a backhoe valued at $25,000  to support the college’s commitment to gas utility construction education. M State will use this one-time donation in a new Gas Utility Construction and Service program  for students desiring a career in the gas utility industry.

“This backhoe will generate great returns for CenterPoint Energy by cultivating a trained workforce we desperately need now and in the future as more and more of our employees retire," said Scott Lehner, area manager for CenterPoint Energy.

“We are very thankful that CenterPoint Energy’s generous donation will help M State provide a more meaningful and realistic gas utility program for the students in our region,” Dr. Peggy Kennedy, M State President.  “This type of business- education partnership is what career education is all about—providing qualified, skilled  graduates for employers, and meaningful careers for our students.“

Monty Johnson, Dean of Academics and Career/Technical Grants Coordinator added, “This donation will ensure students will receive proper workforce training on the actual equipment they will use throughout their careers.  Bringing the natural gas utility industry into the classroom and bringing the classroom to the industry helps us develop a better educational experience.  At M State, we look forward to years of working together with CenterPoint Energy.”
