Following Safest Year Ever, Xcel Energy receives Minnesota Governor's Safety Awards

May 3, 2016

MINNEAPOLIS – Going home in the same condition they arrived--that’s the goal for every Xcel Energy worker every day. And thanks to attention to detail and safe work practices employed in energy facilities around the state, that’s what happens. In recognition of that dedication, 34 Xcel Energy work groups representing more than 3,500 employees received  Governor’s Safety Awards from the Minnesota Safety Council.

“Employers like Xcel Energy know that safety isn’t automatic,” said Paul Aasen, president of the Minnesota Safety Council. “It takes attention, dedication and continuous effort to protect their employees.”
“We’ve seen truly impressive results two years in a row now, which shows great progress in achieving our safety goals,” said Bert Flynn, director, Safety, Xcel Energy. “Receiving safety recognition for more than 87 percent of our Minnesota work groups demonstrates that our employees have personally integrated safety values into their daily work. These results put us among the safest utilities in the country, something we all should be proud of.”

The company’s Journey to Zero program, which began in 2008, includes training and processes that have shown an increase in safety performance for eight straight years. In 2015, Xcel Energy celebrated the company’s lowest OSHA injury rate ever. The company’s OSHA Recordable Incident Rate dropped steadily each year from 2.42 in 2008 to 0.9 in 2015, meaning 700 fewer employees were injured during that period.

Other programs include Stop Work Responsibility where any employee can stop a job in progress if they observe unsafe conditions.
