Sisters of St Benedict Monastery saves with Commercial Design Assistance from Otter Tail Power Company

May 25, 2016

The Sisters of St Benedict Monastery earned a rebate check for more than $70,000 from Otter Tail Power Company for using our company’s Commercial Design Assistance (CDA) program to plan their new 47,000-square-foot living quarters. The CDA program is an integrated process that puts energy efficiency at the forefront for new construction.

Our company worked with the Monastery’s staff to design the new building for maximum efficiency. This included the installation of:

  • A variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system coupled with a geothermal heat pump (GHP). A GHP uses an underground loop field to move heat instead of creating it, pulling heat from the earth into the building during the winter and moving heat and humidity out of the building during the summer. If one room needs to be cooled and another room heated at the same time, the variable refrigerant flow system transfers heat from one room to another without using the geothermal heat pump loop field. This adds to the efficiency of the combined VRF / GHP system.
  • Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting throughout the facility, including occupancy controls in most common areas and meeting rooms. LEDs use less energy and last longer than most lightbulbs while providing a bright, white light. The occupancy controls turn lights off for further energy savings when rooms aren’t in use.
