In August 2013, CenterPoint Energy filed a request, called a rate case, with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) to change its rates for utility distribution service. The final rates approved by the MPUC included a new three-year pilot program for full revenue decoupling to begin July 2015 with annual revenue decoupling adjustments on customers' bills starting in fall 2016. Minnesota regulators approve special off-peak power rates for plug-in vehicle charging

Minnesota utility regulators gave electric vehicles a major jolt Thursday, approving lower electric rates for people who charge plug-in vehicles in their garages at night.

The new rates, which take effect in about two months at Xcel Energy Inc. and two other utilities, could shave 40 percent or more off the already low cost of charging plug-in cars like the Nissan Leaf, Ford C-Max Energi or Chevrolet Volt. Read more

PSC approves We Energies' acquisition of Integrys

The state Public Service Commission on Thursday issued written approval of the acquisition of Integrys Energy Group of Chicago by Wisconsin Energy Corp. of Milwaukee. Integrys is the parent company of Wisconsin Public Service Corp. of Green Bay.

The $9.1 billion deal was previously approved by federal and Michigan regulators and shareholders of each company. It requires approval by regulators in Illinois and Minnesota. Integrys owns natural gas distribution companies in each of those states. Read more

Xcel Energy gets permission from FAA to fly drones

Xcel Energy Inc. says it will begin ­flying drones to inspect power lines and other energy facilities.

The utility said Tuesday that it won approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate the small, unmanned aircraft at low altitude in less-populated regions and within an operator’s line of sight.

Workers likely will use the aircraft to inspect hard-to-reach and environmentally sensitive areas, although the scope and timing of the program are not yet certain, said Michael Lamb, vice president of operating services for Xcel. Read more

Minnesota Power's International Project Clears Major Regulatory Hurdle

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) unanimously approved Minnesota Power's request for a certificate of need (CN) for the 500 kV Great Northern Transmission Line. The project is designed to bring renewable and carbon-free hydroelectricity from Manitoba, Canada, to Minnesota Power's customers in northeastern Minnesota.

Among the most important approvals needed for the 220-mile transmission line first proposed three years ago, the CN decision follows months of public meetings and hearings and the submission of numerous written comments and testimony. Read more
